This is my response:

Hey Nora,

Has it occurred to you that Harrison Rosenburg, whom you refer to as “Lawrence”, is actually as cool as he needs to be. He’s doing what he loves to do and has the honest admiration of an older generation doing the same thing.

While most of us at 13 years old were planning what we wanted to be when we grew up in the very thinnest of pencils with GIANT erasers, this kid is well on his way. He’s not riding the trains looking for something cool. He’s sitting at his drawing table and making something cool.

I own a book store in Edgewater that carries Harrison’s comics and I’ll tell you that he has legit fans up here and maybe a lot of it is support due to his age and maybe there’s more of it that’s support because it’s considered cute, but all of it is genuine. The kid works hard.

When I say he works hard, I’m thinking in terms of many “Comics Professionals” in this town who can’t get to an issue 3 to save their lives.

I’ll also add that the event that Quimbys throws is for the purpose of bringing creators together to talk about what they are doing and provide a bit of lift for getting it done.

Don’t go to an event like this and try and be the coolest kid in the room. While you might be just that’s you’re also the coolest kid in the room who happens to be missing the point.

Personally, I have watched Harrison develop as a young artist for about the past year and I really do mean develop. I didn’t have a chance to meet and get pointers from my comic book idols when I was 13. If I’d have met George Perez, Steve Rude, John Byrne, Gil Kane, James Sherman and Howard Chaykin at that age, AND GOTTEN USEFUL FEEDBACK from them who knows what would have happened.

It burns me up that sometimes we can be so damn cynical as to totally NOT understand when we might actually be seeing something really cool in action.
